A powerful lightning strike damaged a house in Mandi Killianwali on Sunday morning, tearing through its reinforced cement concrete (RCC) roof and damaging electrical installations and household appliances. Six members of the family were inside the house when the incident occurred, but they narrowly escaped a major tragedy. A woman suffered minor injuries to her hand after reportedly receiving an electric shock.
The incident took place around 7 am at a house in Ward No. 11, on a street near Bal Mandir School and close to the residence of Kishore Sarpanch. The house belongs to Rampravesh, who works as a mason to support his family.
According to Rampravesh’s son, Nitish Patel, the family members were sitting in a room when a loud explosion-like sound suddenly shook the house. The lightning reportedly struck the roof and travelled from the upper floor to the ground floor, leaving damage along its path. A hole was also reportedly formed in the ground near the main entrance, highlighting the intensity of the strike.
Roof, Electrical Fittings and Household Appliances Damaged
The family said the lightning strike damaged electrical wiring on both floors of the house. Several essential household appliances were also affected, including two LED televisions, another television set, four fans, a refrigerator, a water heater, a sewing machine and a mobile phone.
The family’s daughter-in-law was preparing bread in the kitchen when the incident occurred. She sustained minor injuries to her hand after reportedly experiencing an electric shock. The other family members escaped without injuries.
The damage to the roof, electrical installations and household equipment has left the family facing a significant financial challenge. However, the total financial loss has not yet been officially assessed.
The incident occurred amid reports of strong winds and heavy rainfall in several parts of Punjab on Sunday. While the family members were fortunate to escape serious injuries, the damage has raised concerns about the cost of repairing the house and replacing essential appliances.
The family will now have to assess the extent of the structural damage and arrange repairs to restore normal living conditions. Despite the extensive damage caused by the lightning strike, the survival of all six family members without major injuries came as a significant relief.
