Police have arrested three people in connection with the violence and vandalism at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara following the spread of information about the alleged rape of a female student.
The three accused have been identified as Gagan, James Dahiya and Abhi, all residents of Tibbi Mohalla in Phagwara. Police said their involvement was established through digital evidence.
The accused were produced before a Phagwara court and sent to three-day police remand. They are likely to be questioned about their alleged involvement in the violence and vandalism on the university campus.
James Dahiya is reportedly an LPU student, while Gagan works as a pizza delivery executive for Domino's.
Gagan's family, however, said they were not informed about the grounds of his arrest. His maternal uncle reached the Phagwara court after learning about the arrest and said Gagan had been missing since Wednesday.
According to the family, Gagan contacted them by phone before his court appearance and informed them about his detention. His uncle said the family asked police about the case but had not received clear information.
The family also said Gagan had no previous criminal case against him and had joined the pizza delivery job around one-and-a-half months ago.
A Sattnampura police station official confirmed that three people had been arrested in the case. However, the investigating officer did not disclose further details about the accused or the ongoing investigation.
