LPU violence ; DGP visits campus, assures strict action after high-level probe ordered

Punjab Police on Monday intensified its response to the violence that rocked Lovely Professional University (LPU), with Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav visiting the campus and assuring strict action against those found responsible after a high-level investigation ordered by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The unrest at the university on Sunday had turned violent, with protesters allegedly setting police vehicles on fire and clashing with security personnel. The incident drew widespread attention across the state and prompted the government to order an immediate probe.

Accompanied by Special DGP Praveen Sinha, DGP Gaurav Yadav inspected the campus and reviewed the law-and-order situation. He said the Chief Minister had directed Punjab Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and identify all those responsible.

“Student safety is our top priority. There will be no compromise on the security of students, and anyone found guilty during the investigation will face strict action as per the law,” the DGP said.

Yadav said the situation on the campus was now under control and efforts were being made to restore normalcy. He also assured students that their concerns would be heard and addressed through appropriate channels.

Responding to questions regarding the police lathi-charge during the protests, the DGP said the action had been taken to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation of violence. He maintained that the police acted according to the circumstances prevailing at the time.

Punjab Government has taken a serious view of the incident, with top officials closely monitoring the investigation. Police teams have begun collecting evidence, reviewing video footage and recording statements as part of the probe.

Officials said the inquiry would establish the sequence of events leading to the violence and ensure accountability for any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, security has been strengthened in and around the university campus to prevent any further disturbance.
