In a major crackdown ahead of Diwali, Faridabad Police have seized nearly 2,496 kg of material used in making firecrackers from a room in the residential Mukesh Colony area of Ballabhgarh.

The seizure was made by the Crime Branch Sector 30 following a tip-off. Police arrested one person in connection with the alleged illegal storage of the explosive-natured material.

According to police, the seized consignment included around 200 kg of sulphur and 2,296 kg of potassium nitrate. Both chemicals are commonly used in the manufacture of firecrackers.

The arrested accused has been identified as Puneet, a resident of Mukesh Colony, Ballabhgarh. During preliminary questioning, he allegedly told investigators that he had brought the material from Hathras in Uttar Pradesh.

Following his interrogation, the police team reached the room where the material had allegedly been stored. A search led to the recovery of the large quantity of sulphur and potassium nitrate.

Police are now investigating the purpose for which the material was brought into Faridabad, as well as identifying other people allegedly involved in its procurement, storage and distribution. Officials are also probing the supply chain from Uttar Pradesh.

Police said no previous criminal record of the accused has surfaced so far. The recovered material has been taken into custody and further legal proceedings have been initiated.

The recovery has also raised concerns over the storage of such a large quantity of potentially hazardous material in a residential locality. Authorities are examining how the consignment reached the area and whether proper safety and legal requirements were followed.

The seizure comes ahead of Diwali, when demand for firecrackers typically increases. Police are expected to keep a close watch on the illegal storage and movement of firecracker-making materials to prevent any untoward incident.
