Punjab Police have arrested two men and seized 5 kg of heroin during an operation against drug trafficking in Amritsar. The Counter Intelligence (CI) team, Amritsar, carried out the operation near Mudhal Bypass and recovered the contraband from the possession of the accused. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mahinder Singh and Kulwant Singh, both residents of the Mustafabad area of Amritsar.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the two accused used to procure heroin consignments from unidentified persons and subsequently distribute the drugs to different locations across Punjab. Police suspect that the case may be linked to a wider drug trafficking network. Investigators are now working to identify those supplying the consignments as well as the people who were supposed to receive them.
Operation Conducted on Amritsar-Batala Road Following Secret Information
According to the DGP, the Counter Intelligence team in Amritsar received information that Mahinder Singh and Kulwant Singh were allegedly involved in drug trafficking in association with some unidentified individuals. The information further indicated that the two had recently received a large consignment of heroin and were travelling towards Amritsar-Batala Road to deliver it to another person.
Acting on the information, police teams launched an operation without delay. The suspects were intercepted near Mudhal Bypass and searched, leading to the recovery of 5 kg of heroin. Both men were subsequently arrested, and legal proceedings were initiated against them.
Police Working to Trace the Entire Drug Trafficking Network
Police are now investigating the source of the heroin, the intended recipients of the consignment and the identities of other individuals allegedly involved in the illegal trade. The DGP said efforts were underway to establish both forward and backward links of the network and take action against everyone found involved.
In this connection, FIR No. 71 was registered on November 1, 2026, at the Police Station, State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Amritsar. A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway.
