Punjab Newsline | Mansa
Tensions prevailed in Punjab’s Mansa after anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota (45) was shot dead. The district administration demolished the house and medical store of the accused chemist, Ashwini Kumar, under police protection. The action came amid public anger over the killing, with Sikh organisations enforcing a market shutdown in the town on Wednesday.

The medical store was also vandalised, and a fire broke out at the premises amid the unrest. Security arrangements were strengthened as protests continued over the killing.
Ashwini Kumar, who is accused of shooting Jhota dead, has been arrested by the police. The killing has triggered widespread outrage, with Sikh organisations and supporters demanding strict action against those involved.
Family Refuses to Perform Last Rites
Jhota’s family has refused to perform his last rites until its demands are met. The family is seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and has demanded the resignations of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
The protests have intensified pressure on the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the case.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of the incident and sought reports from Punjab Chief Secretary and DGP Gaurav Yadav.
Bathinda Range DIG Harjit Singh said an FIR had been registered in connection with the murder and the main accused had been arrested.
According to the DIG, two people have been named in the case so far. Police are also investigating the possible involvement of four to five other unidentified individuals.
Police Say Situation Under Control
The DIG said the situation had turned tense due to the large number of people participating in protests following Jhotta’s killing. A minor fire incident was also reported during the unrest.
However, he said the situation had now returned to normal and was under control. Police are continuing their investigation into the murder and the possible involvement of other suspects.
