A major landslide struck near Janglikh Bridge in the Chirgaon area of Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district on Monday morning, disrupting traffic after a large portion of a hillside suddenly collapsed onto the road.
According to local reports, stones had been intermittently falling from the hillside since Sunday, prompting concerns among commuters and residents using the route. The situation worsened on Monday morning when a significant section of the hill gave way, sending massive amounts of debris and large boulders crashing onto the roadway.
The incident triggered panic among people present in the area, although no casualties or injuries were immediately reported. A substantial stretch of the road was buried under debris, forcing the suspension of vehicular movement and affecting connectivity in the region.
Administrative officials reached the site to assess the situation and initiate measures to safely clear the debris and restore traffic movement. Authorities are currently monitoring the stability of the hillside before reopening the route.
The landslide also impacted the nearby Sundaru Khad, where debris temporarily obstructed the flow of water. The blockage raised concerns among local residents about the possibility of sudden flooding if water accumulated behind the debris.
However, Rohru Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Dharmesh Ramotra clarified that the water flow in the khad has resumed and there is no risk of a lake-like situation forming at present. He nevertheless advised residents living near the watercourse to remain vigilant, as sudden changes in water levels cannot be ruled out.
Officials continue to keep a close watch on the area while efforts are underway to ensure public safety and restore normalcy.
