Messaging platform WhatsApp has reportedly placed thousands of user accounts in India and several other countries under a 24-hour review, temporarily disabling all messaging and calling features for affected users.
When users opened the app, they saw a notice stating: “Account in Review. Date requested: 3 August 2026. We are reviewing your account activity and device information to ensure it complies with our Terms of Service.”
The issue began surfacing around 8 pm IST on Monday, with many affected users taking to social media to complain that they were unable to send messages, make calls or access normal WhatsApp functions.
In a statement issued after the complaints emerged, a Meta spokesperson said the company conducts such reviews to protect the security of other users. The spokesperson added that mistakes can occasionally occur and that the company is working to resolve the issue quickly.
Users reported that Meta did not provide any prior warning or notification before placing the accounts under review or restricting access.
Below the “Account in Review” message, WhatsApp displayed two support options:
“How to use WhatsApp responsibly” — offering guidance on acceptable use of the platform.
“About stolen phones and accounts” — providing information for users concerned about compromised devices or accounts.
The temporary restrictions have raised concerns among users who rely on WhatsApp for daily communication, business operations and customer interactions, and many are awaiting further clarification from Meta on the scale and cause of the account reviews.
