A police team conducting an anti-drug operation in Mohali came under a deadly attack on Saturday after suspected drug traffickers allegedly opened indiscriminate fire and assaulted officers with swords while attempting to evade arrest near Saneta village.
The incident occurred when the CIA Staff team acted on a confidential tip-off about a major heroin ("chitta") consignment expected to be delivered in the area. Acting swiftly, the police set up a checkpoint and surrounded the suspects in an effort to catch them red-handed.
According to police, as officers moved to stop the suspects' vehicle, the accused realized they had been surrounded. They allegedly called additional accomplices to the spot before launching a sudden attack on the police team. The assailants opened heavy fire and also attacked officers with sharp-edged weapons.
Two constables, Parmjeet Singh and Jagjit Singh, were injured in the assault. Parmjeet Singh sustained a bullet injury to his leg, while Jagjit Singh suffered injuries during the sword attack. Both injured policemen were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Phase-6, Mohali, where they are undergoing treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.
Following the attack, the accused fled the scene. Police have launched a large-scale search operation and set up checkpoints across the area to trace and arrest the attackers.
The attack took place around 4 p.m. on Saturday, shortly after Mohali Police received intelligence regarding the planned delivery of a large quantity of heroin near Saneta village. The investigation is ongoing, and security has been heightened across the region as authorities continue the manhunt for the suspects.
