The southwest monsoon has officially entered Punjab, bringing the promise of widespread rainfall across the state over the coming days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh Centre, conditions are now highly favourable for further advancement of the monsoon, with rain activity expected to intensify from July 2 to July 6.
The weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall across most parts of Punjab, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts during this period, while heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas on July 2, 3, 4, and 6.
Districts including Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Mohali, Patiala, and Sangrur are expected to witness thunderstorms, gusty winds, and intermittent rainfall under the yellow alert.
On July 2, isolated heavy showers are likely over parts of Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), Mohali, and Fatehgarh Sahib. Similar conditions are expected to continue on July 3, with northern and central Punjab likely to receive widespread rain and isolated heavy downpours in the same regions.
The spell of rain is expected to persist on July 4, with most districts witnessing showers and gusty winds, while parts of eastern Punjab may experience heavy rainfall.
On July 5, rain activity is expected across the state, particularly in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Patiala, Sangrur, and adjoining districts, where thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are likely under the continuing yellow alert.
By July 6, the monsoon is expected to remain fully active, bringing heavy rain to several districts along with strong winds. The IMD has warned that intense rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, and localized flooding, urging residents to remain cautious and follow weather advisories.
