Devbhumi Himachal Pradesh is witnessing the fierce form of nature once again, bringing the pace of daily life to a complete standstill. Continuous heavy rains over the past few days have unleashed havoc across the hills, grinding normal life to a halt. According to the State Disaster Management and Emergency Operation Centre, landslides and falling debris have completely blocked more than 64 major roads across the state. Districts like Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Sirmaur are among the worst affected, where the collapse of primary connecting routes has severed dozens of villages from their respective district headquarters. With transportation networks collapsing, long queues of vehicles have formed on both sides of the roads, causing immense hardship to local residents and stranded tourists alike.
The crisis extends far beyond blocked roads, as essential utility services have also been severely disrupted. Strong winds and heavy showers have damaged over 200 power transformers, plunging dozens of villages into darkness and disrupting local drinking water supply projects. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has added to the anxiety of residents by issuing a four-day 'Yellow Alert' for heavy rainfall, lightning, and intense thunderstorms across the plain and mid-hill districts of the state. Weather officials estimate that this spell of chaotic weather will persist, which could potentially cause water levels in rivers and local streams to rise to dangerous thresholds.
In light of the worsening situation, the state administration and local police forces have transitioned to high-alert status. Patrolling has been intensified in vulnerable zones and along riverbanks. Authorities have issued a strong advisory appealing to citizens and tourists to avoid non-essential travel during heavy downpours, stay away from overflowing rivers and streams, and maintain a safe distance from landslide-prone areas. Disaster management teams have been deployed and instructed to stay prepared for any emergency to ensure roads are cleared swiftly and normal life is restored at the earliest.
