As the winter season arrives, markets get filled with the aroma and sweetness of jaggery. During cold weather, people prefer eating jaggery because of its warm nature, which helps keep the body energized from within. Along with its rich taste, jaggery is considered highly beneficial for health. It contains essential minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus, along with several vitamins that are important for the body.

Jaggery is prepared using natural methods from sugarcane juice, due to which most of its nutrients remain intact. According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), nearly 70 percent of the world’s total jaggery production takes place in India. This highlights the importance of jaggery in Indian food habits and traditional diets.

A study published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrated Medical Sciences (JAIMS) states that jaggery has been used as a natural sweetener in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 3,000 years. In Ayurveda, jaggery is considered effective in conditions such as anemia, jaundice, asthma, allergies and digestive disorders. Consuming jaggery in winter helps keep the body warm, boosts immunity and protects against several cold-related health problems.

According to nutritionist Dr. Anu Aggarwal, jaggery is a healthier alternative to refined sugar, but it should still be consumed in moderation. People suffering from diabetes or obesity should be especially careful and must consult a doctor or nutrition expert before including jaggery in their daily diet. Since jaggery contains natural sugars, excessive consumption may lead to a sudden rise in blood sugar levels.

As per the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 100 grams of jaggery contains a good amount of iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. These nutrients help strengthen bones, improve blood levels, support digestion and provide instant energy to the body. However, experts advise that jaggery should always be eaten in limited quantities and preferably as part of a balanced diet.

When consumed in the right amount and at the right time, jaggery can become a powerful natural health booster during the winter season.
