Panic spread in the prestigious Maya Garden City society in Zirakpur on Monday after the body of a newborn baby was found inside a dustbin. Soon after receiving the information, Zirakpur police reached the spot, recovered the body and launched an investigation into the incident.
According to information, a sanitation worker had arrived at the society to collect garbage when he spotted the newborn’s body lying inside a dustbin. He immediately informed the police and society residents about the incident.
A police team reached the spot, inspected the area and collected evidence. Investigators are now trying to determine who dumped the newborn’s body in the dustbin and when the incident took place.
Police are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed inside Maya Garden City and on nearby roads. The footage is being scrutinised to track the movements of suspicious individuals approaching or leaving the area around the dustbin.
Police are also questioning local residents and security guards as part of the investigation.
The newborn’s body has been kept at the mortuary of the government hospital in Dera Bassi for post-mortem examination and further legal proceedings.
Zirakpur police said the identity of the person responsible would be established based on the post-mortem report and CCTV footage, following which strict legal action would be taken.
