A 30-year-old woman was found hanging inside her home in Butana village of Haryana’s Gohana on Sunday morning, prompting police to register a case against her husband and three other relatives on charges of allegedly driving her to suicide.

The deceased, identified as Priyanka, had married Neeraj alias Shree Bhagwan, a plumber from Butana village, on May 14 this year. According to a complaint filed by her brother Narendra, a resident of Bidhlan village, Priyanka had been facing harassment from her in-laws since her marriage.

Narendra alleged that a woman in Neeraj’s family was involved in an illicit relationship and that Priyanka was subjected to physical and mental harassment after she objected to it. He further claimed that besides her husband, Priyanka’s sister-in-law, maternal uncle and maternal aunt also mentally harassed her.

According to the complaint, Priyanka did not come out of her room on Sunday morning despite repeated calls from family members. When there was no response, relatives looked inside through a ventilation opening above the door and found her hanging from a hook attached to the ceiling fan using a rope and a scarf.

After receiving information, a police team reached the spot, broke open the door and brought the body down. The body was taken into custody and further legal proceedings were initiated.

Baroda police station SHO Ashok Kumar said an FIR has been registered against Priyanka’s husband and three others based on the complaint filed by her brother. The case is being investigated, and police have assured that appropriate action will be taken after examining all aspects of the matter.
