Said, Zira’s People’s Struggle Sets an Example
Punjab Newsline, Chandigarh-
Padma Shri Pargat Singh, Secretary of the AICC and MLA, today welcomed the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) intervention on uranium contamination in Punjab’s groundwater as a significant step toward public health and accountability.
The tribunal issued notices to Punjab and Central government agencies following alarming reports of excessive uranium levels in drinking water sources across multiple districts. Singh termed the issue not just environmental but a serious health threat affecting thousands of families.
“Access to safe drinking water is a basic right. The NGT has compelled the Centre and Punjab government to act responsibly. They must now urgently release funds, install water purification systems, conduct medical screenings, and publish water quality data transparently. Delays or excuses are unacceptable,” he said.
He further demanded the immediate release of Jal Jeevan Mission funds earmarked for water safety projects in contaminated regions.
Zira: A Victory for People’s Power
Singh also hailed the recent NGT order mandating the permanent closure and dismantling of the Malbros Distillery in Zira. This followed a sustained three-year protest by the Sanjha Morcha—a coalition of 40 villages—against pollution of their land, air, and water.
“Zira’s victory is a powerful example of community resilience. But this is only one battle. Continuous vigilance, rigorous enforcement, and covering all affected areas are needed to protect public health and the environment,” Singh noted.
Call for Accountability
Singh emphasized that the uranium contamination and Zira victories underline the urgent need for transparent governance, strict regulation of polluters, and active citizen engagement. “Punjab needs justice, not just sympathy. Clean water must be guaranteed for all. Polluters should face penalties. Governments must act promptly. It’s about saving lives, not shaping headlines,” he said.
He called Immediate medical camps in affected zones. He also called Real-time water quality monitoring with public dashboards. He want Strong enforcement and penalties for polluters. Pragat Singh said a dedicated state task force coordinating with the Centre and NGT for swift action
