A total of 206 madrasas in Uttarakhand that have received recognition from the Education Department or have applied for it will no longer observe Friday as their weekly holiday. Instead, they will follow the prescribed weekly holiday schedule applicable to other schools.
The Uttarakhand Minority Education Authority has written to the Education Department, directing it to take the necessary action to implement the change.
The authority has clarified that madrasas recognised by the Education Department, as well as those seeking recognition, must comply with the department's prescribed standards and academic regulations. As part of this requirement, the existing arrangement of observing Friday as a weekly holiday is being changed.
Under the revised system, these madrasas will follow the same weekly holiday schedule as other schools. The change will also apply to madrasas currently undergoing the recognition process as they seek to become part of the state's mainstream education system.
According to the authority, the objective is to bring madrasa education in line with prescribed academic standards and connect students with the mainstream education system.
The directive applies to the 206 madrasas covered by the recognition process and does not, on the basis of the information provided, establish a blanket change for all madrasas across the state.
