A long-standing rivalry turned deadly in Kapurthala’s Bishanpur Jattan village on Tuesday evening when two motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly opened fire on two brothers, killing the elder sibling and leaving the younger one critically injured.

The deceased has been identified as Lovepreet Singh alias Labba (24), son of Sodhi and a resident of Bishanpur Jattan. His younger brother Harshdeep sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Civil Hospital, Kapurthala, where he is undergoing treatment.

The incident triggered panic and fear across the village, with residents gathering near the crime scene soon after the firing.

Upon receiving information, DSP Dr. Sheetal Singh reached the spot along with a police team. The body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination, while a detailed investigation was launched. A forensic team was also called to collect evidence from the scene, including empty cartridge shells and other material clues.

The victim’s mother, devastated by the loss, told police that Lovepreet had been involved in an earlier dispute with some villagers and had allegedly been receiving threats for a considerable time. Fearing for his safety, the family had reportedly kept him away from the village at relatives’ houses.

She said Lovepreet had informed her over the phone on Tuesday that he wanted to return home, and she had tried to stop him from coming back. However, he reached the village without the family’s knowledge and was allegedly targeted soon after his arrival.

DSP Dr. Sheetal Singh said the suspects involved in the attack have been identified and police teams are conducting raids at multiple locations to arrest them. He added that investigators are examining all angles related to the old rivalry that may have led to the shooting.

Police said further action will be taken once the injured brother’s statement is recorded and additional evidence is analysed.
