Amritsar witnessed heightened security and emotional commemorations on Saturday as the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star was observed at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, located within the Golden Temple complex.
The religious observance began with the conclusion of the Akhand Path at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. However, the atmosphere turned tense after a message delivered by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj. Following his address, pro-Khalistan slogans were raised by supporters, while several individuals were seen brandishing swords and carrying posters in support of Khalistan beneath the Akal Takht Sahib.
In his message, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj said Punjab remains the homeland of Sikhs and urged members of the Sikh community living abroad to maintain their connection with the state. He encouraged families to bring future generations to Sri Harmandir Sahib and appealed to people not to sell their land in Punjab despite settling elsewhere.
The Jathedar also expressed concerns over the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, alleging that attempts were being made to bring Sikh religious institutions and traditions under legal control and weaken established institutions.
Remembering the events of June 1984, Gargaj stated that the Indian Army's operation at Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib led to the deaths of several individuals, including Damdami Taksal chief Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Bhai Amrik Singh, and retired Major General Shabeg Singh. He described the use of tanks and heavy weaponry during the operation as a significant chapter in Sikh history. He also paid tribute to women, including Bibi Satnam Kaur and Bibi Waheguru Kaur, who, he said, sacrificed their lives for their faith.
Meanwhile, authorities have put Amritsar under a comprehensive security cover. Senior police officials are monitoring Heritage Street and surrounding areas through an extensive CCTV surveillance network. More than 65 checkpoints have been established across the city, including major entry routes such as the Golden Gate, Pathankot-Amritsar Road, and Tarn Taran-Amritsar Road.
Security agencies have also intensified checking operations at the railway station, bus stand, Sri Durgiana Temple, and Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport. Passengers and their belongings are being thoroughly screened, while public awareness campaigns are being conducted to encourage reporting of any unattended or suspicious objects.
