A speeding Mahindra Thar went out of control and met with a horrific accident on the road connecting Sectors 16 and 17 in Chandigarh late Friday night. The SUV first rammed into a roadside tree before overturning four to five times and coming to a halt on the road. The vehicle was completely damaged in the accident.

Two youths travelling in the Thar sustained serious injuries. They were trapped inside the mangled vehicle and had to be pulled out after considerable effort. One of them, identified as Sahil, died during treatment, while his friend Himanshu was injured.

According to the police, Sahil was a resident of Rohtak in Haryana. His friend Himanshu, aged 22, belongs to Bihar and was living in a rented accommodation in Chandigarh's Mali area. He works at an IT company.

Inspector Sudesh Kumar, Station House Officer of Sector 26 police station, said the preliminary investigation suggested that the Thar was being driven at a high speed and the driver lost control of the vehicle. It subsequently crashed into a roadside tree before overturning several times.

The impact was so severe that the SUV was badly damaged, leaving both occupants trapped inside. They were eventually rescued and rushed to a hospital, where Sahil succumbed to his injuries. Himanshu is undergoing treatment.

Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact speed of the vehicle and the circumstances leading to the accident.
