Punjab Newsline, Chandigarh, December 3-
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed the full implementation of India’s three landmark new criminal laws in Chandigarh. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act, came into effect nationwide on July 1, 2024. Chandigarh stands as the first administrative unit to achieve 100% implementation of these laws.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the occasion, highlighted the transformative potential of the new framework. “Justice will be delivered within three years of filing an FIR. Our criminal justice system is now the most modern in the world,” he stated. Shah also commended the Chandigarh administration for its swift action in adopting the reforms.
Earlier, PM Modi witnessed a live demonstration simulating a crime scene investigation under the new laws. Chandigarh Police showcased modernized methods for collecting evidence and recording statements during the demonstration at Punjab Engineering College. Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur briefed the prime minister on the new procedures.
