A wanted gangster was injured and arrested following an exchange of fire with the police near village Mattewal in Amritsar on Wednesday. The accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the encounter and was subsequently taken into custody before being shifted to a hospital for treatment.
According to police, the encounter took place along a water channel near village Mattewal during an operation led by Mattewal Police Station SHO Sub-Inspector Daljit Singh. During the exchange, the accused allegedly opened fire at the police team, firing around four to five rounds, prompting the police to retaliate.
The arrested accused has been identified as Harman Singh, son of Harjinder Singh and a resident of Boparai village. Police said Harman Singh was wanted in several criminal cases, including a firing incident involving a local resident in Boparai village.
Following the encounter, senior police officials rushed to the spot. Amritsar Rural SSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal visited the scene along with SP (Detective) Ramandeep Singh, DSP (Detective) Gurinderpal Singh Nagra, CIA Staff In-charge Ajaypal Singh and SHO Daljit Singh.
A forensic team also reached the site to examine the scene and collect evidence. Police are investigating all aspects of the encounter, including the firing incident and the weapon allegedly possessed by the accused.
The injured accused is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, while further legal proceedings and investigations into his criminal activities are underway, police said.
