Voting for the Punjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections and student council elections in eight affiliated colleges of Chandigarh commenced on Monday, with nearly 78,000 students expected to exercise their franchise.
At Punjab University, around 39,000 students are eligible to vote, while a similar number of students in eight affiliated colleges will cast their ballots to elect 76 candidates contesting various posts. Elections for major student body positions are being held in six colleges, while Dev Samaj College, Sector 45, and Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, are conducting polls only for selected positions.
Students are casting their votes at polling booths established in their respective departments and colleges. University authorities have made it mandatory for voters to carry a valid university identity card to participate in the election process.
Each voter is being issued two ballot papers. One ballot paper is for electing the main office-bearers of the student union, while the second is meant for voting for the Departmental Representative (DR) of the concerned department.
The counting of votes is scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM. To ensure transparency and maintain the integrity of the electoral process, the entire voting exercise is being videographed. Security arrangements have also been put in place across the campus and affiliated colleges to ensure smooth and peaceful polling.
The elections are being closely watched as they are considered a key indicator of student sentiment and leadership trends across the university and its affiliated institutions.
