Medical stores across Punjab and Chandigarh will remain closed tomorrow, leading to concerns over disruption in the availability of medicines. The strike will begin at midnight on May 19 and continue till midnight of May 20.
According to a public notice issued by the Chandigarh Chemists Association, all chemist shops and pharmacies will observe the shutdown in protest against e-pharmacy operations and online medicine distribution platforms.
The association stated that the strike has been organised as part of a nationwide agitation by pharmacy and chemist groups demanding stricter regulation of online medicine sales.
The chemists’ bodies have urged the central government to take strict action against the alleged illegal sale of medicines through online platforms.
Meanwhile, in Chandigarh, the administration has decided to keep several medical stores and Jan Aushadhi centres open to reduce public inconvenience. A total of 51 medical stores will remain operational during the shutdown to ensure essential drug availability.
