Schools across Punjab and Chandigarh will switch to winter timings from November 2 in view of the changing weather conditions.
The Punjab Education Department has decided to revise the timings of all government, private, aided and recognised schools in the state. Under the new schedule, schools will start at 9 am, with primary schools operating until 3 pm and middle to senior secondary schools remaining open until 3:20 pm.
The revised timings will remain in effect until February 28, 2027. The orders will apply to more than 19,000 schools across Punjab. School timings will be revised again from March 1, 2027, according to the seasonal schedule.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh District Education Office has also issued a winter timetable for all government and aided schools in the Union Territory, effective from November 2 and continuing until March 31, 2027. The order was issued by Education Director Nitish Singla.
As per the schedule, single-shift schools will operate from 8:20 am to 2:20 pm for students, while staff members will be on duty from 8:10 am to 2:30 pm.
In double-shift schools, the morning shift for students from Class 6 onwards will run from 8 am to 1:15 pm. Staff members assigned to this shift will work from 7:50 am to 2:10 pm.
For students in Classes 1 to 5, the evening shift will run from 12:45 pm to 5 pm. The staff schedule for this shift will be from 10:50 am to 5:10 pm.
In Punjab, school timings are revised three times during the academic year according to seasonal conditions. From April 1 to September 30, schools generally operate from 8 am to 2 pm. The schedule is subsequently adjusted to accommodate changing weather conditions.
