Punjab State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri said that 31.6 percent voter turnout was recorded across the state till 12 noon during the ongoing civic body elections.
Polling has largely remained peaceful across Punjab so far. Elections are being held for 396 wards in eight municipal corporations, 1,282 wards in 75 municipal councils, and 218 wards in 20 nagar panchayats.
Meanwhile, former OSD to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Professor Onkar Singh, was detained by police during the municipal council elections in Dhuri. Prof. Onkar Singh had left the Aam Aadmi Party a few months ago and joined the BJP.
According to officials, the action was taken as a precautionary measure. Sangrur SSP Dr. Ravjot Grewal informed Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu that Prof. Onkar Singh had been detained to maintain law and order during polling. However, Ravneet Singh Bittu reportedly expressed strong displeasure and reprimanded the SSP and SP over the police action.
