Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday honoured 87 sportspersons with the prestigious Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award during a state-level felicitation ceremony.
Along with them, 1,070 medal winners from various sports disciplines were also recognised for their achievements.
The Punjab government distributed prize money worth Rs 32.05 crore to the athletes through cheques during the event. Addressing the gathering, Mann said the state government has not only rewarded Olympic and Asian Games medal winners with Rs 1 crore each, but has also provided government jobs to nine medal-winning players.
Highlighting the Punjab government’s sports vision, the Chief Minister said that for the first time, financial assistance worth Rs 8.61 crore was provided to 220 athletes to help them prepare for tournaments and improve their performance at national and international levels.
