Punjab Congress workers on Friday staged a protest in Chandigarh demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration, led by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, witnessed a standoff between party workers and police as protesters attempted to march towards the Election Commission office.
The protest began near the RBI office in Sector 17, from where Congress workers tried to march to the Election Commission office. However, police erected barricades midway and stopped the procession, leading to heated exchanges and pushing between protesters and security personnel.
As Congress workers continued their attempt to move forward, police used water cannons to disperse the crowd. Protesters insisted on reaching the Election Commission office despite repeated warnings from the authorities.
Speaking before the march, Raja Warring alleged irregularities in the electoral process and demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He also called for the registration of an FIR against the CEC. During the protest, when police began detaining workers, Warring climbed onto a police bus and continued addressing supporters.
Notably, senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot did not attend the protest, while former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was also absent from the demonstration.
The protest concluded amid heavy police presence, with several Congress workers being detained as authorities prevented the march from reaching the Election Commission office.
