A 40-year-old devotee from Punjab was killed after a large boulder fell from a hillside onto a moving vehicle on the Chamba-Bharmour road in Himachal Pradesh during the early hours of Wednesday.
According to police, four devotees from Indora in Punjab were travelling in a Thar vehicle to take part in the Manimahesh Yatra. The incident occurred around 3 am near Mehla in Chamba district when a huge stone suddenly rolled down from the hill and crashed onto the vehicle.
The boulder smashed through the sunroof and entered the vehicle, seriously injuring Makhan Singh (40), a resident of Maliya village in Hoshiarpur district and son of Sharwan Singh.
He was immediately rushed to Chamba Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead after examination.
After receiving information about the accident, police and administrative officials reached the spot and began an investigation. The body has been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination, while the victim’s family has been informed.
Police said that four youths were travelling in the vehicle, and the other three occupants escaped unhurt.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the danger of falling rocks and landslides on mountainous roads during the pilgrimage season in Himachal Pradesh.
