The Punjab Government has declared June 18 a statewide public holiday to mark the Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. An official notification issued by the state government stated that all government offices, boards, corporations, educational institutions and other state-run establishments across Punjab will remain closed on the occasion.
The holiday comes at a time when schoolchildren in the state are already enjoying their summer vacation, while government employees will also receive an additional day off to observe the sacred occasion.
Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, is revered as "Shaheedan De Sartaj" (The Crown of Martyrs) for his supreme sacrifice. His martyrdom is regarded as a defining moment in Sikh history. Following his sacrifice, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji inspired the Sikh community to uphold the values of both spirituality and courage by embracing the ideals of a saint and a soldier.
With the declaration of the public holiday, official work in government institutions across Punjab will remain suspended on June 18 as devotees pay tribute to the revered Sikh Guru.
