Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, protection and education of orphaned and destitute children across the state.
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said the government has made a budgetary provision of ₹432.38 crore for the welfare scheme during the financial year 2026-27. Of this amount, ₹181.23 crore has already been released to ensure timely and uninterrupted financial assistance to eligible children.
According to the minister, around 2.45 lakh orphaned and destitute children across Punjab are currently receiving regular financial support under the scheme. The assistance is aimed at helping children continue their education, meet essential needs and move towards a dignified and self-reliant future.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said vulnerable children should not be treated merely as figures in government records, but as a shared responsibility of society. She emphasized that no child should have to give up education, dreams or opportunities because of poverty, neglect, difficult circumstances or the absence of parental support.
Minister further stated that the scheme covers children below 21 years of age whose parents are either both deceased, both missing from home, or physically or mentally unable to look after the family due to their condition.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the Punjab Government is working towards building a sensitive and inclusive welfare system in which every vulnerable child receives the support and opportunities needed to realize their potential.
She added that securing the future of children today would help lay the foundation for stronger families, an empowered society and a prosperous 'Rangla Punjab' in the future.
The minister said the initiative goes beyond financial assistance and reflects the government's resolve to provide every child with a safe childhood, dignified life and equal opportunities to learn, grow and contribute to the development of Punjab.
