Reaffirming the Punjab Government's focus on women-centric welfare and inclusive development, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said the state has spent ₹298 crore on its free bus travel scheme for women during the financial year 2026-27.
The minister said nearly 1.20 crore free bus journeys are recorded every month under the flagship initiative, reflecting its widespread acceptance and impact across Punjab.
Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that the scheme has significantly reduced the financial burden on women, particularly those travelling for employment, education, healthcare and other essential purposes. She said affordable and accessible public transport has enabled women to travel with greater confidence, explore new job opportunities and participate more actively in the state's social and economic development.
She added that the free travel facility is available in government-operated buses, ensuring safe, reliable and convenient transportation for women across Punjab. According to the minister, the initiative has strengthened women's mobility, independence and economic participation.
Highlighting the government's vision, Dr. Baljit Kaur said Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is committed to building a "Rangla Punjab" where every woman can travel safely, live with dignity and achieve her full potential. She added that the state government will continue to roll out people-centric welfare initiatives aimed at empowering women and ensuring the benefits of development reach every household.
