In a major breakthrough against international organised crime, the Punjab Police, in coordination with central agencies, has successfully secured the extradition of Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalem from the Republic of Moldova.
Amrit Dalem, described as a key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, was wanted in Punjab in several serious criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Arms Act and drug-related offences.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said the extradition marks the first successful repatriation of a major fugitive criminal from a European country in the history of the Punjab Police.
The operation was carried out under Operation Eastern Reach, a six-month-long covert intelligence-led manhunt. The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), Punjab, and the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell played a key role in tracing and securing the accused.
According to the information shared by the DGP, Amrit Dalem was detained on March 7 this year near the border of Moldova. He was identified on the basis of an Interpol Red Notice and taken into custody by Moldovan authorities following coordination between the Punjab Police and central agencies.
Amritpal Singh had been absconding abroad for a long period and was wanted in multiple criminal cases registered in Punjab, including those related to murder, extortion and organised crime. Punjab Police had been making sustained efforts at the international level to trace and bring him back to India.
