The southwest monsoon has once again intensified across Punjab, bringing widespread rainfall to several parts of the state on Tuesday. Heavy showers were reported from Mohali, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and Chandigarh, while Pathankot and Faridkot remained under cloudy skies since morning.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain and thunderstorm alert for 10 districts of Punjab. Due to the continuously changing weather conditions, the state has recorded a 1.1 degree Celsius drop in temperature, providing relief from the recent humid conditions.
In a positive development, officials said that the water levels in Punjab’s major dams remain below the danger mark, easing concerns of any immediate flood threat despite the fresh spell of monsoon rain.
According to the Meteorological Department, a special alert was issued until 10:30 am for several areas, including Patran, Samana, Patiala, Rajpura and Dera Bassi, where heavy rainfall is expected. The department has also warned of lightning strikes and strong winds blowing at speeds of 30–40 kmph in these regions.
IMD further stated that Lehra, Sunam, Sangrur, Moonak, Patran, Samana, Patiala, Nabha, Rajpura, Dera Bassi, Fatehgarh Sahib, Amloh, Mohali, Chandigarh, Kharar, Khamanon, Chamkaur Sahib, Rupnagar, Balachaur, Anandpur Sahib, Garhshankar and Nangal may experience moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph during the day.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles, and follow weather advisories issued by local administrations.
