A woman from Barnala district was killed and around 15 passengers were injured after a Punbus belonging to the Moga depot crashed into the rear of a sand-laden tipper parked on the roadside near Bandala town in Tarn Taran on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred near Arsh Dhaba on the Jammu–Kashmir–Rajasthan National Highway when the Punbus (PB-04-AE-0995), which had left Amritsar for Moga at around 9:30 am with nearly 35 passengers on board, rammed into a stationary tipper (PB-38-G-9307). Three sand-loaded tippers were reportedly parked along the roadside at the time of the crash.
According to initial reports, the bus was travelling at around 80 kmph when it collided with the parked vehicle. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the bus, extending up to the window section, was extensively damaged.
Rajdeep Kaur, daughter of Gurjit Singh and a resident of Dhanaula in Barnala district, died on the spot. Around 15 passengers sustained injuries, six of whom are reported to be in critical condition.
Those seriously injured include Satnam Kaur of Amritsar, Sita of Batala in Gurdaspur district, Harjinder Singh of Algo Khurd in Tarn Taran, and Harpreet Kaur, Gurmel Kaur and Veerpal Kaur, all residents of Dhanaula in Barnala district.
Following the accident, teams of the Road Safety Force (SSF) rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to various hospitals for treatment. The identity of the tipper driver has not yet been established.
Jandiala Guru police station SHO Harpal Singh said the body of the deceased woman has been taken into custody and post-mortem proceedings have been initiated.
