A tragic accident occurred at Panjab University on Tuesday when a PhD scholar from the Department of Microbiology died after reportedly suffering an electric shock on the university campus. The deceased has been identified as Jyoti, a resident of Rewari district in Haryana.
According to preliminary information, Jyoti was on her way from Girls’ Hostel No. 10 to the Department of Microbiology. She was reportedly walking along an unpaved path beside the road connecting Girls’ Hostel No. 8 and UIET when she suddenly came into contact with an electric current and collapsed.
People present at the spot rushed her to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 16 (GMH-16) in Chandigarh, where doctors declared her dead.
The exact cause of the electrocution has not yet been officially confirmed.
Police and university authorities have launched an investigation to determine the source of the current and whether any negligence in the electrical infrastructure or maintenance was involved.
The incident has triggered grief across the university campus and raised serious concerns about electrical safety and infrastructure maintenance at Punjab University. Students have reportedly demanded a comprehensive review of safety arrangements on the campus and strict action against any officials found responsible for lapses that may have contributed to the fatal accident.
