A daylight shooting in Punjab has once again raised questions about the state's law-and-order situation. RTI activist Simranjit Singh, a resident of Jalandhar, was shot dead by unidentified attackers near Lovely University in Phagwara on Saturday.
According to preliminary information, Singh had reportedly come to the area for some work when the assailants opened fire on him. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and collapsed on the spot. The sudden attack created panic among local residents and passersby.
People in the vicinity immediately informed the police, following which Phagwara police teams rushed to the scene. Senior police officials also arrived and initiated an investigation into the incident.
The victim’s body was taken into police custody and shifted to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Authorities have begun collecting evidence from the crime scene and reviewing all possible leads.
Following the murder, police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to identify and apprehend the attackers. Further investigation is underway.
