A 45-year-old man accused in the 2020 Sri Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege case was brutally murdered in his home in Turan village near Mandi Gobindgarh in the early hours of Monday, triggering panic and tension in the area.
The deceased was identified as Mewa Singh, son of Mahender Singh and a resident of Turan village. According to police, an unidentified assailant allegedly entered his house around 2 a.m. and attacked him repeatedly with a sharp-edged sword. The assault was so severe that Mewa Singh was beheaded, and he died on the spot.
Preliminary reports indicate that Mewa Singh was at home with his family when the attacker entered the premises and carried out the fatal assault before fleeing the scene.
Police said Mewa Singh had been booked in October 2020 at Mandi Gobindgarh Police Station for allegedly desecrating Sri Guru Granth Sahib at a gurdwara in Turan village. He had been granted bail twice during the course of the trial, which is still pending.
According to villagers, Mewa Singh worked as a tailor before the incident.
Soon after receiving information, Mandi Gobindgarh SHO Sandeep Singh, Amloh DSP Vikramjit Singh, and other senior police officials reached the spot. The body was taken into custody for post-mortem examination, while forensic teams collected evidence from the crime scene.
Police have registered a murder case and launched an intensive investigation to identify the attacker and determine the motive behind the killing. Officials said all angles are being examined, and efforts are underway to arrest the accused at the earliest.
