Navpreet Singh Navi, the 50-year-old husband of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Sarpanch Kulwinder Kaur, was shot dead outside his residence in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district late Friday night.
According to family members, Navpreet Singh was standing outside his house with his friend Amrit Singh while preparations were underway in the village for a langar during the Baba Budha Sahib fair. During this time, unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire on him.
He was immediately rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The victim’s family and SAD constituency in-charge Kanchanpreet Kaur Randhawa alleged that the murder was linked to a dispute over drug trafficking in the area. They claimed that Navpreet Singh had been opposing a local youth, identified as Sonu, from allegedly selling narcotics in the village.
Randhawa alleged that the accused, along with five to six associates, carried out the attack. However, police have not confirmed these allegations and said all angles are being investigated.
Meanwhile, SP (Investigation) Riputpan Singh has ordered a high-level probe into the case under the supervision of DSP Sukhbir Singh. Police officials said efforts are underway to identify and arrest the attackers at the earliest.
Authorities have assured that the investigation is progressing and that those responsible for the killing will be brought to justice.
