Punjab Governor and UT Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday said that many of the issues discussed in Parliament and state legislatures have historically come to light through journalists’ reports and investigative journalism. Describing the media as a vital pillar of democracy, he appreciated journalists for bringing public interest issues to the attention of governments and policymakers.

Kataria made these remarks during an interactive meeting with members of the Senior Journalists Forum, Chandigarh, held at Punjab Lok Bhawan in Chandigarh.

Welcoming the forum members, the Governor said journalism has always played a significant role in strengthening democracy and shaping public opinion. He noted that the power of the pen, combined with integrity, honesty, and impartial analysis, has earned journalists immense respect and credibility in society.

He emphasized that exposing flaws in the system is the duty of journalists, as it enables governments and administrations to take corrective measures in the larger public interest. According to him, constructive criticism and fearless journalism help improve governance and promote public welfare.

Highlighting the importance of self-improvement, Kataria said individuals should not hide their shortcomings but instead learn from them and strive for continuous progress. He added that journalists act as guides for governments by drawing attention to areas requiring reform, while their suggestions contribute to transparent, accountable, and people-centric governance.

The Governor also praised the initiative of the Senior Journalists Forum, calling it a commendable effort to unite senior journalists on a common platform. He spoke about the challenges faced by journalists after retirement and stressed the need for organizations that provide support, mutual assistance, and opportunities for continued engagement.

On the occasion, Senior Journalists Forum President A.S. Prashar thanked Punjab Lok Bhawan for facilitating the interaction, while Forum Chairman Jagtar Singh Sidhu welcomed the Governor and shared details about the organization's objectives and activities.

The meeting concluded with a meaningful discussion on the role of the media in a democratic society and various issues related to the welfare of journalists.
