Indian stock market witnessed a sharp decline in early trading on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as heavy selling pressure dragged benchmark indices lower.

The BSE Sensex plunged 601.14 points to 72,997.55, while the NSE Nifty fell 146 points to 22,604.80. During pre-market trading at 9:03 am, the Sensex was down 340.35 points at 73,258.32, while the Nifty declined 85.21 points to 22,664.55.

The sharp fall was driven by selling in major information technology (IT) stocks, rising international crude oil prices and cautious investor sentiment ahead of the US Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision.

Global geopolitical tensions and elevated energy prices continued to weigh on market sentiment, adding to concerns among investors. Meanwhile, market participants remained focused on corporate earnings announcements and developments surrounding the anticipated listing of Jio Platforms.

The decline reflects growing caution among investors amid uncertainty over global economic conditions, energy costs and the future direction of interest rates. Market participants are expected to closely monitor global cues, crude oil price movements and corporate earnings for further direction.
