Fresh snowfall in the high-altitude areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu has led to a significant drop in temperatures across Himachal Pradesh, while rain in Shimla and several other parts of the state has intensified the chill. However, the state capital Shimla witnessed sunny weather on Tuesday.
The rain and snowfall have pushed daytime temperatures down by up to 10 degrees Celsius in some parts of the state compared with normal levels. A considerable fall in night temperatures has also been recorded in higher reaches.
Kalpa recorded its lowest September minimum temperature in 18 years on Sunday night. The minimum temperature was recorded at 4.4 degrees Celsius. Earlier, on September 24, 2008, Kalpa had recorded a minimum temperature of 3.0 degrees Celsius.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), some parts of Himachal Pradesh may continue to receive rain on September 29, while light snowfall is possible in higher-altitude areas, particularly in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.
The recent weather activity has also affected daytime temperatures, with several parts of the state recording maximum temperatures around 2 to 4 degrees Celsius below normal during the period.
The weather is expected to improve from September 30, with mainly clear and dry conditions forecast across the state. Mostly dry weather is likely to continue in most areas until October 4.
For Shimla too, the forecast indicates a shift towards relatively clearer weather after September 29, suggesting that the unsettled conditions at the end of September may give way to more stable weather with the beginning of October.
