A tragic road accident occurred late Saturday evening in the Ani subdivision of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, claiming the lives of four women teachers after a massive pine tree fell on their moving vehicle amid strong winds and a severe storm.
According to information, around 5 PM, during extreme weather conditions marked by heavy storm and gusty winds, a large pine tree suddenly fell on a moving Bolero camper (HP01K-4621) near Bali-Oal on the Shamshar–Gugra road. The impact caused the vehicle to lose control and tumble off the road.
Seven People Were on Board, Four Died on the Spot
The vehicle was carrying seven occupants, including the driver and six education department employees who were returning home after duty. Four women died on the spot due to the impact and subsequent overturning of the vehicle.
The deceased have been identified as:
Snehlata (38), resident of Parli Dhar
Banti Kaundal (38), resident of Lamiseri
Usha Kumari (43), resident of Tarala
Seema Azad (54), resident of Ropdi
All four were residents of Ani area in Kullu district and were working as teachers.
Three Critically Injured, Hospitalised
Three others sustained serious injuries in the accident, including driver Suresh Chand (42), Tara Devi (47), and Reena Kumari (40) from Sarkaghat in Mandi district. They were rushed to a nearby civil hospital, where their condition is reported to be critical.
Rescue Operation Launched Amid Chaos
Local villagers and administration teams immediately reached the spot and carried out rescue operations under difficult conditions. The bodies were recovered from the wreckage after significant effort, while the injured were shifted for urgent medical care.
Shockwave Across Education Sector and Region
The intensity of the storm was such that the fallen tree completely mangled the vehicle, leaving the victims with no chance to escape. The incident has triggered widespread grief across Kullu district, especially in the education community.
Authorities have directed compensation for the families of the deceased as per norms and ensured proper treatment for the injured.
Investigation Underway; Leaders Express Condolences
Police have taken custody of the bodies and initiated post-mortem proceedings. A detailed investigation is underway to assess how the severe weather conditions led to the tragic incident.
Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, along with local MLA Lokender Kumar, have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
