Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday targeted the BJP-led Central government over allegations of “vote theft,” accusing it of attempting to suppress protests instead of addressing the concerns raised by demonstrators.

Sukhu alleged that the Centre was “scared” and questioned the reported steps to restrict internet services and close railway stations amid the protests. He said that in a democracy, the government should correct its mistakes rather than silence those raising their voices.

Chief Minister announced that the Congress would march towards the Supreme Court on Monday and confirmed that he would personally participate in the march. Over the past two days, Sukhu has been in Delhi, participating in the Congress party’s protest campaign over the alleged vote theft issue.

Emphasising the importance of democratic rights, Sukhu said protests were one of the most powerful tools available to people in a democracy. He maintained that young people should be given the opportunity to express their views peacefully.

He further said that attempts to suppress protesters and impose restrictions could make demonstrations more intense. According to Sukhu, it was the government’s responsibility to listen to people’s concerns, engage with protesters and respect their democratic rights.

The Congress has been holding protests over its allegations of electoral irregularities, accusing the BJP and raising concerns over the electoral process. The BJP’s position on the allegations was not included in the statement provided.
