Sunmeek Singh Hanry Sidhu, nephew of senior Punjab Congress leader and former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday.

He formally joined the party at an event in Chandigarh, where senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia inducted him into the party in the presence of Punjab Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal.

Sunmeek Singh said he had worked for the Congress for nearly 20 years without any personal interest. He said a recent statement by Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, regarding the possibility of a family being given two to four party tickets, came as a shock to him and influenced his decision to leave the Congress.

“Rajinder Kaur Bhattal is my aunt. I have worked for the Congress for the last 20 years without any selfish motive,” Sunmeek Singh said. He added that former Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring had also made him a member of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC).

He said several people associated with his family for years are now part of the third generation of political workers.

Explaining his decision to join AAP, Sunmeek Singh said he was impressed by the party’s policies and believed that workers receive respect and recognition within the organisation.
