Supreme Court on Thursday deferred the hearing on the Punjab government’s plea challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court order directing a CBI probe into alleged matter linked to Punjab Chief Minister’s office. The matter will now be heard on October 28.

Punjab government has challenged the High Court’s order directing the CBI to register a case and investigate allegations against people linked to the Chief Minister’s Office. The High Court had also directed the CBI to submit a status report within two months.

The state government filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court on October 6. Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for Punjab, had sought an urgent hearing, arguing that the matter involved the state’s jurisdiction and the federal structure. He also raised questions over the timing of the action ahead of the Assembly elections.

The Supreme Court had earlier declined to take up the matter immediately and indicated that it could be listed during the week. The latest adjournment means the plea will now come up for hearing on October 28.
