Punjab Police have achieved a major breakthrough in the grenade attack case involving the Urban Estate police post in Batala, where an explosion occurred on the night of August 1.
In a joint operation, Counter Intelligence Jalandhar and Batala Police arrested the third accused, Karanjit Singh alias Bachcha, son of Ramanjit Singh and a resident of Shiv Nagar, Batala. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused was allegedly linked to an ISI-backed terror module.
According to police sources, the module was allegedly being operated under the directions of a suspected Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) mastermind based in Portugal.
Accused Was Hiding After the Attack
Investigators said that all the accused had been identified the day after the grenade attack, but their identities were not made public at that stage. The suspects are reportedly residents of Batala, and one of them is said to be a juvenile.
During the investigation, police also found indications that the module was allegedly planning similar attacks on police posts and police stations across Punjab. Officials believe that the timely arrest has helped avert a potentially major terror incident.
Wider Terror Network Under Investigation
Counter Intelligence and Batala Police are now working to uncover the entire terror network connected to the case. Investigating agencies are trying to identify:
Foreign-based handlers,
Local facilitators who allegedly provided logistical support,
Other members associated with the module.
Police officials said the investigation is not limited to the grenade attack alone. Both the forward and backward linkages of the accused are being examined to determine how the module received resources, funding, and operational support.
More Arrests Likely
With the alleged involvement of foreign handlers and local operatives emerging during the probe, officials indicated that further arrests are possible in the coming days.
Punjab Police reiterated that its campaign against terror networks and organised crime would continue with full intensity. The force said its objective is to completely dismantle such modules and maintain peace, security, and law and order in Punjab.
