A slab of an under-construction bridge over the Betwa River collapsed late Friday night around 2 am, killing six labourers. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued three workers trapped under the debris after a prolonged 7.5-hour operation.
According to officials, the incident occurred in the Lalpura area, around 25 km from the city. Authorities said the victims were sleeping beneath the structure when the slab gave way.
Uttar Pradesh Bridge Corporation Managing Director Dharmveer Singh stated that the collapse was triggered by strong winds and heavy rainfall. He added that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the incident.
Meteorological officials reported wind speeds of 70–80 kmph in Hamirpur during the night due to a storm.
SDRF officials confirmed that the rescue operation, which began around 2:30 am, has been completed. However, debris removal is still underway as a precaution to ensure no other workers remain trapped.
Among the deceased, four were from Banda and two from Hamirpur.
