A major road accident took place on the Sultanpur Highway in Ambala on Saturday afternoon when a speeding trailer rammed into stationary vehicles from behind amid a traffic jam. Four vehicles, including a Mahindra Thar, a Swift and a Creta, were damaged in the collision. The Thar was badly crushed, while the trailer driver became trapped inside the cabin. Local residents rushed to the spot and managed to pull him out before taking him to Ambala Civil Hospital. According to preliminary police information, no fatalities were reported.
The accident occurred at around 2 pm when traffic was moving slowly due to a jam. According to the initial information, the trailer first collided with a stationary container before hitting other vehicles in front of it. The impact triggered a chain collision, leaving four vehicles damaged and bringing traffic to a halt in the area.
Ajay Sharma, who was travelling in the Thar with his wife from Panipat to Chandigarh, said that both of them sustained injuries in the accident. He claimed that his back was hurt and his wife was also injured. Ajay further alleged that the trailer was overloaded and its driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. These claims have not been independently confirmed. He said the Thar was a new vehicle and that he had spent around ₹4 lakh extra on it, apart from approximately ₹1.25 lakh on its tyres.
Tanishk, a local resident who reached the spot after hearing the loud crash, said he immediately joined the rescue effort. He and other people helped those trapped in the damaged vehicles. While some bystanders were seen recording videos of the incident, several others came forward to assist the injured and rescue the trapped driver.
The trailer driver told people at the spot that he was transporting grocery goods from Panipat to a transport point in Ambala. He said the trailer had first struck a container before hitting the other vehicles.
Police have confirmed that four vehicles were damaged in the accident. The exact cause of the collision is being investigated, and further details are expected after the inquiry.
