A tragic road accident claimed the lives of two people after a speeding Toyota Fortuner overturned near ITI Chowk in Lalru, Mohali district, in the early hours of Friday.
The deceased have been identified as 23-year-old gym owner Manjot Singh, a resident of BRS Nagar in Ludhiana, and the vehicle's driver, Ravi Kumar. Two other occupants of the SUV escaped with minor or no injuries.
According to police, the Fortuner was on its way to Delhi when a stray animal suddenly came onto the road near ITI Chowk under the Lalru police station area. While trying to avoid the animal, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into the central divider before overturning.
Manjot Singh's father, Amarpal Singh, told police that his son had left Ludhiana around 11:45 pm on Thursday along with his friend Akash Verma, security guard Rajiv Kumar Pandey, and driver Ravi Kumar.
After the accident, the injured were rushed to hospital, where doctors declared Manjot Singh and Ravi Kumar dead. Akash Verma sustained minor injuries, while Rajiv Kumar Pandey escaped unharmed.
In his statement to police, Amarpal Singh said the crash was purely accidental and that no one was responsible for the incident. He also declined to pursue any legal action against anyone.
Police have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). After the post-mortem examination, the bodies were handed over to the families, and further investigation is underway.
