Two women riding a scooter were killed in a tragic road accident near Capital Hospital in Moga after their vehicle was hit by a speeding Thar SUV. The Mehna police have arrested the accused driver and seized both the Thar and the scooter involved in the crash.
According to police, the accident took place on August 2 at around 1:40 pm. The complainant stated that his wife Sumanjit Kaur alias Samanjit was travelling with her friend Deepika, a resident of Cloth Market, Moga, on an Activa scooter (PB-29-AA-6335). The two women were reportedly heading to Capital Hospital to inquire about a job opportunity.
Collision occurred while crossing the road cut
Police said that as the women were crossing a road cut to enter the hospital premises, a speeding Thar SUV (PB-06-AS-7071) approached from the opposite direction and allegedly hit the scooter without blowing the horn. The impact threw both women onto the road, leaving them critically injured.
They were immediately rushed to Capital Hospital, where doctors declared Sumanjit Kaur dead on arrival. Deepika later succumbed to her injuries during treatment, police officials said.
Accused identified and arrested
Based on the complaint, Mehna police registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The accused driver has been identified as Arshdeep Singh, a resident of Sandhwan Khurd village, Batala tehsil, Gurdaspur district.
Police confirmed that Arshdeep Singh has been arrested, while both the Thar SUV and the scooter have been taken into custody. Further investigation and legal proceedings are underway.
